In mathematics and science, a nonlinear system is a system in which the change of the output is not proportional to the change of the input. Nonlinear problems are of interest to engineers, biologists, physicists, mathematicians, and many other scientists because most systems are inherently nonlinear in nature. There are three main areas of investigation: collective effects, physics of free electron laser (FEL), and beam optics and nonlinear dynamics. The group supports the operating accelerators at SLAC and studies beam physics that can enable or limit future accelerators. Members work closely with other ARD programs.

standing of the Nonlinear Maxwell Equations as well as the mechanisms of the nonlinear response of the material at the quantum level. We begin this chapter with a brief history of nonlinear optics, examples of some of the more common phenomena, and a non-rigorous but physically intuitive treatment of the nonlinear response. History   The text covers historical accelerator development, transverse betatron motion, synchrotron motion, an introduction to linear accelerators, and synchrotron radiation phenomena in low emittance electron storage rings, introduction to special topics such as the free electron laser and the beam-beam interaction.

The authors apply statistical methods to the physics of stored beams and describe in rigorous detail a wide range of beam physics problems. These range from single particle dynamics, through the theory of linear coherent oscillations and cooling techniques, to the kinetic effects in intense beams and nonlinear collective by: Nonlinear optics (NLO) is the branch of optics that describes the behaviour of light in nonlinear media, that is, media in which the polarization density P responds non-linearly to the electric field E of the light. The non-linearity is typically observed only at very high light intensities (values of atomic electric fields, typically 10 8 V/m) such as those provided by lasers.

& M. Jacob (eds.) Gervais. However, the strength of collective beam instability depends on the beam intensity and we can always reduce the beam current such that the instability indeed is only a perturbation.

Once the mechanism of instability is understood, corrective measures can be introduced allowing the increase of the beam current.

In the conceptual, theoretical and experimental framework of nonlinear beam dynamics and collective cooperative effects, the book provides an update of the state-of-the-art theoretical formulations, techniques and technologies, innovative concepts and scientific results obtained at existing accelerator facilities.

The phenomena introduced by space charge are relatively complex. The main source of complexity, from a nonlinear dynamics point of view, is the issue of self-consistency. It implies a self-consistent space charge electric field evolving with the dynamics of the beam, and analytical solutions are possible in some special cases : I.

Electron acceleration by plasma wakefields driven by multiple bunches was experimentally studied. It is expected that a wakefield driven by each bunch builds up to result in a large acceleration gradient. However, the build-up of wakefields was not ideal, due to the peaked plasma-density distribution in a small plasma chamber.

Volume 1 provides a general understanding of the field and a firm basis for the study of the more elaborate topic, mainly nonlinear and higher-order beam dynamics, which is the subject of Volume : Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Various self-bunching phenomena can be observed during normal SIS and ESR operation with and without electron cooling. In a recent experiment at injection energy ( MeV/u) with a cooled Ar 18+ beam in the SIS we observed self-bunching phenomena on the first harmonic.
